I accept been making mashed potatoes like this for over l years...and it's the way MY mother made them. For this recipe to be a success, you have to know a trivial about potatoes. Notice the recipe called for Blistering potatoes. Reddish ones volition be viscid. Yukon Golds make Expert mashed potatoes. Start them off in Cold water so everything will reach humid at the same time. When they are tender, drain them in a colandar and allow them STEAM. The more steam is gone, the more the potatoes will absorb the milk. (No problem with 'soupy' potatoes here...you fifty-fifty MAY have to add more milk than the recipe calls for. While the potatoes are steaming, heat the butter and milk in the same pot you cooked the potatoes in. (Why wash another pan?) Add the steamed potatoes and mash and season. (I've had my share of 'gummy' and 'soupy' mashed potatoe in my time :) Oh! And if this is for a special occasion...use cream instead of milk. Over the meridian!!!

Perfect mashed potatoes. Heating the milk and butter is a must, I didn't realize what a difference it would brand, my potatoes were non glutinous and they stayed hot longer.

Nifty recipe for "good sometime fashioned" mashed potatoes! It's directly forward and just plain delicious. The perfect mashed spud for your favorite gravy! I e'er estrus up my milk in the microwave and add it to the potatoes (sometimes apply half due north half to make them creamier). You just can't go wrong with this classic recipe for comfort food!

Have about 8 cloves of raw garlic and throw them into the water with the potatos and let them cook together. They will be soft and mash easily. TO DIE FOR
05/23/2002
This recipe is neat but I added all the milk in and the mash potato became too runny (like soup). I'll say not to add all the milk this recipe suggested. Only add a little milk a fourth dimension until u think it's the texture u desire and that'south information technology. Then maybe u'll love it. ^-^.

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the all-time! Smash the potatoes to mostly lump-free before adding the butter and milk. One matter I advise doing differently is to add the butter to the potatoes starting time, then add heated milk as needed. That way you become all of the butter in the mashed potatoes and can add merely the right amount of milk for the correct texture.
12/02/2011
At that place isn't enough butter in these mashed potatoes, yous should have a to the lowest degree a stick of butter. I make mashed potatoes all the time and everyone just loves my potatoes.
02/27/2007
Swell basic recipe. If y'all're watching your calories etc, endeavor substituting the potatoes starchy cooking water for most of the milk. Later on that, merely a quick splash of milk is needed.
12/xi/2010
I accept been looking for a recipe for good, old fashioned, mashed potatoes like mom used to make. This is it. Thanks!
11/24/2005
I simply made this recipe and it is fantastic. I made this recipe ten iv. I only used 1/2 the milk (I retrieve if I added whatsoever more than it would be likewise runny) and added 4 dabs of cream cheese for a little umph. First-class, this is a swell recipe for you to brand into your own.
03/twenty/2001
Oh, my God! These are the best mashed potatoes that I have ever put in my oral fissure! I added cream cheese (half of one 8 oz pkg.) Let's just say, there are NO left-overs! Wonderful!
03/xvi/2003
This is your very basic recipe for mashed potatoes and I have always made them this way. I personally adopt using half & one-half or heavy cream in identify of the milk. It's not healthier but information technology does makes these creamier. I also prefer "more than" to my mashed potatoes (ie: chives or sour cream) Just these are very expert and go well with many traditional meals.
08/12/2001
I took a leaf from a previous review and added a packet of foam cheese to this recipe. The result is nothing but delicious! It did take a LOT longer than the stated melt time for the potatoes to get soft enough to be able to mix them, though! I may cut back on the cream cheese adjacent time, though, to make them a fleck "healthier". I will NEVER make boxed taters over again! Thanks for the recipe!
11/10/2013
These potatoes are so easy & yummy. I really followed the recipe then am qualified to rate information technology. I waited to add the warmed milk & butter until the potatoes stopped steaming in the colander. This step was something I hadn't thought of before, information technology kept potatoes warm during mashing.
07/30/2011
This is how I make mashed potatoes, only I don't heat the milk and butter separately. I drain the potatoes well, and then add together the milk and butter, salt and pepper and cook on depression heat for a minute or so. Then I brew the potatoes with an electric mixer. But, I don't mix besides long, or you accept starchy potatoes.
02/26/2011
If the mashed potatoes are too runny, just mash/whip a footling longer. The longer the potatoes are whipped, the more than they volition thicken up. Endeavour substituting two/iii loving cup of the water the potatoes cooked in, mixed with ane/3 cup of powdered milk for the 1 loving cup of milk. Very Nice.

Lee'due south Mashed Potatoes - I find when making mashed potatoes that using evaporated milk makes them creamier and I leave a little of the spud h2o in there to sparse them downward. I like a lot of butter and salt is a must. Lee Southward.

I take been making mashed potatoes for over 60 years and along the way I have learned a few tricks for creamy mashed potatoes. I am currently cooking for 3. Then I employ 7 minor potatoes or 4-v larger ones. After draining the potatoes, I put them back in the pan over a high heat to dehydrate backlog h2o on the potatoes. While heating in the pan, I milkshake the pan to move the potatoes around. Then I add 1/two of a quarter pound stick of butter, slicing it thin then it chop-chop melts on the hot potatoes. (I don't recall this recipe uses enough butter.) And so I mash the potatoes with a white potato masher until all of the lumps are mashed. So I add the milk, about 1/3 cup, gradually, mashing as I go until I get to the consistency that I want. I prefer mashed potatoes with a picayune substance. And then I retrieve this recipe uses too much milk. If gravy were used on them, they would likely exist very watery. The primary thing here is to dry the backlog h2o from the potatoes before they are mashed. The water seems to brand them more than "grainy" than creamy. So I don't hold with the reviewer that said to add water instead of some of the milk. I similar the idea that i reviewer suggested to eddy garlic cloves with the potatoes, but would advise that the cloves are smashed and left to sit for at least minutes before calculation them to the potatoes. This not just increases the garlic flavor, but likewise increases the wellness benefits of the garlic.
03/07/2002
I usually brand instant potatoes but never again! These were so light and fluffy! I am a big fan!
x/23/2011
Give thanks you lot for the cracking mashed potatoes recipe! I call up this is the showtime time I've e'er made them from scratch. We had my boyfriend'due south parents over for dinner and I made these with the chicken I made and they came out slap-up! The only matter is, I did not apply salt and pepper. Too, I probably used nearly 2.v lbs. of potatoes, I merely eyeballed them though. Also, with the amount of potatoes I only used one-half a cup of milk and that was perfect. I kind of destroyed our blender on another recipe I was making, so I used a fork to beat out the potatoes, and so I added the milk mixture and then whisked it to the creaminess. At this point, the mashed potatoes were kind of cold, so I had to microwave them for a bit, which was no trouble. Great recipe, will definitely utilize information technology again.
09/11/2011
Every bit advertised, this is your basic delicious mashed potato recipe. I left the skins on my Yukon golds, and used skim milk. Perfect compliment to my state ribs with gravy. Thank you for sharing!
08/07/2007
Very good and yes basic, this is e'er how I prepared mashed potatoes, except we call them foam potatoes. I retrieve merely eyeballing your milk will help with the consistancy you may desire, instead of just adding the whole cup of milk at one time, everything kind of depends on the size of your potatoes. I recall this will aid so your outcome will not be soupy potatoes.
08/20/2013
all i can say is yummo these mashed potatoes were then good they were gone no leftovers,, and i tried the trick with heating the butter and milk wow what a difference
03/xvi/2003
This is your very basic recipe for mashed potatoes and I have always fabricated them this style. I personally adopt using half & half or heavy cream in place of the milk. It's non healthier simply information technology does makes these creamier. I likewise prefer "more than" to my mashed potatoes (ie: chives or sour cream) Just these are very good and get well with many traditional meals.
11/04/2010
I've never heated the butter and milk beginning - keen idea! I also unremarkably add cauliflower in with the potatoes when I eddy them. The taste great and my picky son doesn't even know they're at that place!
11/17/2002
Great recipe for mashed potatoes. I used half & one-half to brand it a little creamier and I put in a little garlic salt to perk it up. Great recipe . . . I volition definitely be making this once again very shortly.
12/03/2011
I utilize sour cream instead of milk. Butter can be melted but sour cream goes in right from the container into hot potatoes.
10/12/2013
This is a good no-fail base. Here's a warning... this recipe makes for a loose, smooth and almost runny mashed potatoes. If you, like me, like your mashed potatoes on the thicker side, don't add in all of the warm milk and butter mixture at one time. I did brand that mistake simply I apace solved the runny problem past adding in about a quarter cup of instant mashed potato flakes. It thickened it up and it even so tasted like it was fabricated from real potatoes. I doubled the amount of butter for richness (used Smart Balance Spread) and did not need to add any common salt. Actually, I establish the Smart Balance Spread to exist on the salty side then I put in a couple pinches of sugar (yes, sugar!). It gave it more than depth and it's not like it was candy-sweet or annihilation. I also sprinkled in a affect of no-salt meat seasoning (a combination of onion pulverization, garlic pulverization, etc) and some green onion for freshness.
eleven/15/2001
My married man and I actually liked this recipe. Yet, I boiled the potatoes longer and then that they would be softer and I likewise added garlic pulverisation to requite them a picayune kicking. I made them in the blender because I couldn't discover the murphy masher and information technology was actually difficult to go the potatoes out of the blender. Merely other than that, it was actually simple. I would suggest adding a trivial milk at a time as to make certain its not so runny, which is what I did. It'due south difficult to please my husband and then I'll definately get in once more.
06/07/2001
These were easy and oh, so yummy! I made mine with blood-red potatoes with the skin. I advise adding liquid to potatoes a lilliputian at a time as mine were besides runny. No ane cared, though - they were great! Thanks.
05/05/2005
I'm an Asian whose mom never fabricated mash and I "don't practice" cooking myself. I wanted to try making bones mashed potatoes and this recipe works! I put in both black and white pepper, and added a light sprinkle of garlic powder similar some suggested, ewww, information technology reeked. Next fourth dimension I'll just reduce information technology to a pinch. Otherwise I followed all the measurements to a T and it came out but fine, not runny or anything. Easy to make, tastes skillful, merely next time I'll consume information technology with gravy LOL.
01/sixteen/2012
Very, very good mashed potatoes :-) I didn't follow the proportions exactly, simply I judged how much I needed based on what the potatoes looked similar. I too used heavy cream instead of milk, and added a sprinkle of fresh ground chili. It was so good!
04/12/2007
Nada smashing nearly these :? There but potatoes with milk and butter.. same equally my mom has been making for froever and a twenty-four hours.
12/07/2005
This reciped is perfect. It DOES brand a difference to heat the milk and butter. Cold milk and butter added to hot white potato makes the tater gummy. If you lot call back it's fine to utilise cold ingredients because that's the way you always have done it, you are missing out on something special!
02/22/2012
Be certain to add the milk a trivial at a time to become your desired consistency. If I would have added it all, they would take been mode too thin. Merely a thing of preference I suppose. Otherwise they were pretty tasty.
07/14/2010
Similar the recipe says, basic mashed potatoes. Can't go incorrect with that. I'thousand a southern girl and then I add a good fleck more butter to mine.
06/twenty/2005

10/06/2011
Great basic recipe. If y'all don't mind a piddling actress fatty, use half and one-half instead of milk! Information technology makes them much more than creamy and less grainy!
11/26/2007
Amazing! I'd always had a hard time with turning out 'irish potato goo-soup' instead of mashed potatoes. These gustation just like my mom's! A flake of a side-note, if yous have a microwave-condom measuring cup, you can microwave the milk and butter together, stir it up a chip, then blend with the potatoes that way. My stove was otherwise occupied when I fabricated these, haha.
eleven/thirty/2009
This was really great. I needed a basic recipe for my "bones" guys. They loved it. Thank you. This site doesn't need to be all about the fancy stuff.

03/14/2010
I was planning on making a different mashed potato recipe from this site, just my mom beat me to it and fabricated mashed potatoes how she e'er makes them, bones and simple. 10/28/2010
I use this recipe alot and sometimes mix information technology up by adding a fiddling crushed garlic. I also like to apply chicken broth or a bouillon cube when boiling the potatoes. Information technology adds a little extra flavor and my eight yr. old LOVES them.

10/14/2003
I already know how to make mashed potatoes, and it doesn't really demand a recipe to make them. I have always fabricated my potatoes with milk even skim milk, and they taste wonderful. Yous don't even have to estrus the milk and butter. Simply put them right in with the potatoes after they are drained, and they volition warm up because of all of the heat from the potatoes. This volition save yous a step, and some clean up. If yous are looking for a richer mashed potatoe, try using canned milk(undiluted) and a few tablespoons cream cheese.
06/fifteen/2006
This could't exist any easier. Uncomplicated with good taste.
06/23/2012

02/17/2011
Dandy basic recipe! Add two chicken bouillon cubes to the h2o every bit they boil and use a package of cream cheese when yous mix! Incredible!
02/nineteen/2013
If the potatoes are cooked with the peeling on, they are easy to peel and brew, have greater nutritional value, and have a succulent flavour.
11/29/2008
Piece of cake, quick, simple with that "homestyle" gustatory modality. Heating the milk and butter offset is a must. I do ofttimes times utilize a piffling more butter to sense of taste. This is the first recipe I followed when learning how to make mashed potatoes and no matter how I alter them up now, I always use this method every bit a base.
12/24/2010
Keen recipe for mashed potatoes. Zip fancy about them merely the flavor is amazing. They remind me of my grandmothers cooking. Cheers Esmee!!!!
eleven/15/2014
I have referred to this recipe for years, but never followed it exactly. I like to boil 1-ii cloves of garlic per pound of potatoes. Mash the potatoes with the garlic using a potato masher. Add the melted butter and milk slowly so you don't end up with soupy potatoes. I use 2x the butter and half the milk from this recipe. Add common salt and pepper to gustation. In one case you have the season y'all like, utilise an electric beater until you get the consistency you like.
11/07/2001
very easy.......very good recipe for your basic mashed potatoes.......
11/29/2008
This is definitely piece of cake to make, merely seems to be missing something. Maybe more butter and common salt.
10/25/2014
Not plenty butter, too much milk. Information technology is a practiced thing I poured things in slowly and realized that the consistency was fine after merely over half the amount of milk.
07/31/2008
Skilful season. I used an extra T butter after I made them as I thought it needed it. I only used 3/4 milk that's all they needed. I didn't heat the h2o before calculation potatoes, I but put the potatoes in the pan and added h2o to cover.
06/06/2004
Like another reviewer suggested, I added 1/2 pack of cream cheese one time the potatoes had cooked. This was delicious and and then easy!
xi/04/2015
Nosotros absolutely loved this ... I took the communication of the other reviewers and ensured I warmed up the milk and butter. To this mixture, I added near 3 tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese as well. I first mashed the boiled potatoes with a fork, and so added the milk into the mashed potatoes in iii parts. After every addition of milk into the potato, I used my hand mixer to blended the milk mix and the potatoes. Absolutely YUM! Thank you for sharing this recipe :D
10/fifteen/2002

Cheque out picture show.
02/14/2001
This recipe is really skillful, especially if y'all but want proficient ol'mashed potatoes.
10/10/2012
Very Good Recipe. I've made it 2x. Every bit Syble suggested.. it's of import to allow the potatoes to steam after they cook and earlier you mash them. I let them sit in the colander until they stopped letting off steam. Then the potatoes will readily absorb the milk. The 2nd time I made them I boiled them in vegetable goop, and too added 1/4 cup cream cheese. Did call back it improved the flavor in a very subtle way. Everyone one loved the recipe both times that I served it. Savour!
11/22/2018
Well the potatoes weren't soft within the fifteen minutes. I had to look upward a recipe that could actually help me!!
04/06/2015
This was expert even though I forgot to add the salt and pepper. At first, it seemed like way too much milk but it got thicker after whisking. I used russet potatoes which mashed up squeamish and like shooting fish in a barrel.
eleven/23/2018
This is a great bones recipe! You can add together herbs or spices for sense of taste enhancement.
10/16/2006
I liked the idea of warming the milk and butter so I thought that I would give this recipe a try. Glad that I did, that potatoes were actually creamy and this recipe opens the door to add whatsoever of your favorite flavorings. Next, I'll try to add some garlic.
06/23/2003
I've made this recipe many times, but I'yard finally getting around to rating it. Information technology'due south really not bad! Your everyday mashed potatoes; it goes well with almost anything! It goes well merely by itself, simply I ordinarily serve it with some dish that has some sort of gravy to it. When I'm existence healthy conscience, I'll omit the butter and information technology'southward fine as it. I never add the black pepper either, it's not needed.
09/21/2004
Superb! Added 4 ozs of foam cheese; garlic powder; and less than ane/2 loving cup of milk. Served these with a pot roast I fabricated and information technology was a huge hit. This will definitely be my new standard mashed potato recipe.

12/xxx/2017
It was i of my first times in the kitchen, and this recipe was uncomplicated and like shooting fish in a barrel to follow! I boiled the potatoes for an extra long time, and they turned out so soft that I didn't need a potato masher. A wooden spoon was all I used! ten/ten would brand it once again!
12/07/2003
I don't swallow mashed potatos, but I fabricated these for a dinner party with my fellow's family unit (yikes!) and they LOVED them!!!
03/23/2004
Super potatoes. Very, Very easy to brand. I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out perfect. Everyone hither raved well-nigh them. Thanks for the recipe and finishing a great dinner.
04/thirty/2005
Very good and creamy. I live in South America, and haven't had really good mashed potatoes until I tried this recipe. Thanks!
ten/04/2003
I was amazed at how tasty mashed potatoes can be without cream. I used two% milk with a little extra margerine/butter and they plow out wonderful. My husband, who is rather picky about his potatoes, really enjoyed them. I used scarlet potatoes and left some of the peel on, as well, for color and nutritional value. Not bad potatoes!
10/eleven/2016
I doubled the recipe and it worked out slap-up! Left the skins on and left them pretty chunky due to the lack of a tater masher in my kitchen.
07/14/2005
I never use milk in my mashed potatoes, only apply condensed milk instead. I usually use the Great Value kind at Wal-Mart and I have perfect mashed potatoes every fourth dimension!
09/17/2014
Not a bad recipe, add together one teaspoon of baking soda at the finish and see how fluffy it becomes
07/13/2019
